“Worship - The Heart of Sabbath”

Before you begin

Take a moment to pray and ask the Lord to speak to you through His Word, to give you wisdom and understanding of His Word, and to transform you according to His Word.

Read Genesis 2:1-3, Exodus 16-:23-30, and Romans 12:1-2.

As you read, consider these questions:

1. What is this text teaching me about God?

2. What is this text teaching me about me?

3. How do I apply this text to my life?

Text specific questions:
Feel free to pick any of the following questions to work through individually and with your house church. Don’t feel like you have to get through them all, allow the Holy Spirit to lead you during your time together.

Remember, as we open our hearts, our Bibles, and our lives, let’s be sure that our pursuit and discussions lead us to Jesus, His Word, personal honesty, and actual action in the ways we live & lead others.

1. How would you describe your current Sunday or Sabbath rhythm — is it truly restful, Sabbish, or something else?

2. When you consider the 4 movements of Sabbath (Stop, Rest, Delight, Worship) – which is easiest for you? Which is the hardest? Why do you think that is?

3. What are some things (good or bad) you’ve been tempted to orbit your life around besides God? How do you recognize when a “false god” is quietly taking center in your heart?

4. What is one way you could make your Sabbath more of a protest for God’s kingdom and against the way of the world?

5. Would you say that you are “keeping the Sabbath holy”- or treating it like another day off? How well is your current Sabbath rhythm forming your heart in the direction of worship and wholeness?

PRACTICE: Sabbath - Try this next Sunday:

1. Start with God – begin the day with scripture, silence or a prayer of welcome.

2. Worship with God’s People – Show up and bring something to contribute.

3. Enjoy God’s Goodness – Good food, time in creation, time with friends/family.

4. Re-Center Throughout the Day – “Am I aware of God’s presence right now?”

5. End with Thanksgiving – Reflect, worship, pray and praise!
